More about Jim
Jim was born on November 12, 1956 in Glendale,
California. He moved to Fairbanks, Alaska, with his parents in October of 1965.
His family lived in Fairbanks until the spring of 1969, where they moved to Hoonah,
a fishing village in Southeast Alaska. Jim's first paying jobs were working as a
longshoreman, unloading the supply boats that came to the village and working on the
commercial fishing boats.
After graduation from high school in 1975, Jim moved back to
Fairbanks. Following a year of technical school, Jim went to work for the State of
Alaska as a heavy duty mechanic for the Department of Highways, which is now know as the
Department of Transportation and Public Facilities.
During his tenure as a mechanic for the State of Alaska, Jim worked in
the Northern Region in the rebuild room, and in the camps along the Haul Road. He
also maintained the equipment at the airports in some of the interior villages.
In October, of 1990 Jim was appointed to the position of Business
Representative for Local 71 in the Northern Region. He was then
appointed to the position of Assistant Business Manager in the year
2000. His knowledge and experience as
a long-term State employee has helped him to better understand the issues
and problems facing Local 71..
In 2004 Jim was elected to the position of Business
Manager / Secretary-Treasurer without opposition.
Jim, a former Alaskan Golden Gloves Champion boxer, likes
navigating the Alaska rivers in his riverboat, and other hobbies include fishing,
hunting, archery, and
ice hockey. |
