LOCAL 71 MEMBERS UPDATE: TOOL ALLOWANCE SUCCESS

June 23, 2020

Dear Brother and Sister SOA Mechanics,

Today, we report another success. Our long sought and hard-won tool allowance increases will take effect July 12020. Happy Fiscal New Year!

Next week, our Mechanics employed with the State of Alaska will see the increases to their Tool Allowance, thanks to a Letter of Agreement (LOA) signed in March of this year, which was contingent on Legislative Approval.  The LOA states:

  • All Mechanics, Automotive, Aircraft, and Rural ARFF, in the Journey, Advanced Journey/Lead, and Foreman I and lI levels, Wage Groups 54, 53, 52, and 51 (Class Code series PL0212-PL0216 and series PL0222-PL0225), will be required to furnish their own hand tools up to but not including socket sets of 3/4-inch drives. Employees in these job classes will be paid a monthly tool allowance of one-hundred fifty dollars ($150.00).
  • Mechanics, Automotive and Aircraft, Sub-Journey, Wage Group 56 (Class Codes PL02 l 1 and PL0221 ), must furnish all hand tools necessary to work within their class specification. Employees in these job classes will be paid a monthly tool allowance of one-hundred dollars ($100.00).
  • Maintenance Specialists, Electronics, Journey I and Journey II/Lead, Wage Groups 53 and 51
  • (Class Codes PL0421 and PL0422), must furnish all hand tools exclusive of complex testing equipment consistent with this section. Employees in these job classes will be paid a monthly tool allowance of one-hundred dollars ($ l 00.00).

A hearty thanks to our head office, our negotiations team, and to our hard-working members, who took the time to bring their specific ideas to leadership and offer examples we could use. Thanks to those members who tapped into their Union Power. You remained engaged throughout the process and were available for the tough discussions that made this a success for all of us.  We are truly in this together. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to call us, we are here to serve you.

In Solidarity,
